Qui's original organisms eventually developed the ability to photosynthesize. Specially adapted membranes transformed the energy from SEH into the compounds required for cell maintenance. This Photosynthetic group reigned in Qui's oceans for thousands of years.
A meteorite crashed into Qui, bringing with it the original members of the Phagocytic group, which developed the ability to ingest food particles (including Photosynthetic organisms and other Phagocytes). Qui's original organisms, having no means of defense, were nearly wiped out by these voracious invaders.
