WEATHER -
written by surveyor DAN |
| Weather on OSIRIS
varies widely as seen by the graph below. |
 |
Osiris' axial inclination to its ecliptic
plane of 20.0 degrees makes its seasonal temperature variations a little more than
Earth's. The planet rotates on its axis once every 30 hours. The longer day
increases the extremes of daily temperature by 5 degrees and at times the noonday sun can
become almost intolerable to humans in the arid regions. Temperatures in these areas have been known to reach 130 degrees in the
shade! |
The equatorial region is characterized by a tropical zone to the west and a large mountainous mass to the
east. In the center lies a semi arid and temperate climate and behind this, a vast
mountainous range.
|
| In the tropical region,
the constant light, warmth and rainfall from warm water rising from the ocean and
colliding with the cold air from the surrounding mountain allows continuous rapid plant
growth giving rise to luxuriant rain forests. Rainfall is high and often
averages more than 150 inches per year. At times, water vapor condenses into mist, fog, or
cloud and the vegetation develops into cloud forests. |
 |
|
 |
To the east of the equatorial zone, along the coast,
lies a vast mountainous ridge. Air
cools while ascending the mountain's slope and its capacity to hold water decreases
causing an increase in rain, sleet and snow. |
|
The thin, dry air loses heat rapidly and
after sunset, temperatures plummet. The mountain climate is windy and travels
through the mountain ridges and canyons with gale forces.
|
| As you travel north on the continent, just
above the equator, there lies a semi arid
and more temperate climate. Warm air
from ocean currents meet the warm land to create four distinct seasons. |
The northern poles are
covered with a relatively thin ice sheet that averages 2,000 ft. The
southern poles have a permanent ice pack because it is formed on the top of a submerged
volcano. |
| Here one will find the coldest, driest, and windiest
climate. The interior has average temperatures ranging from -67 to -76 degrees. Precipitation which falls only as snow
averages 2 inches per year. |
