Platphyte
This plant includes many species difficult to distinguish. Most have fine filaments in loose or dense tufts. Some are feathery or spongy. Platphyte grows 12 to 16 inches long on rocks or larger algae. This plant is used as a hiding place for various water animals. Platphyte also helps condition the water. They also furnish heat energy for the manufacture of the carbon compounds in their tissues. Sometimes this alga can even grow at low temperatures and can be found on glaciers.
