World Builders  --   Water Ecology Study Questions
Unit 7    Aquatic Environments

Here are some basic things that you should know when you have read the Science Notes for this chapter.

Vocabulary -- know what you are talking about

 symbiosis  competition  evolution   fitness
food chain  food pyramid  trophic level   niche
primary producer  primary consumer  secondary consumer   ecology
 biome  autotrophes  mutation   heterotrophes

Concepts - understand the big picture

How does "survival of the fittest" contribute to change in life forms?
Why are predators necessary in an ecological community?
What kinds of life forms form the base of a food pyramid?
What happens to the energy as it is passed up the food pyramid?
What limits the number and size of top predators in a community?
How do niches develop in living communities?

Facts -- get the details right

What is the primary energy source in a near-shore community?
What  is the primary energy source in a benthic community?
What determines if a mutation will become common in a community?
What is the role of detritovores in a community?
Give an example of cooperation between different species of life forms.

Picture It!

Draw a picture of an aquatic environment with life forms.
Draw a simple food pyramid with three trophic levels for this environment.
