World Builders  --   Land Ecology Study Questions
Unit 10   Land Ecology

Here are some basic things that you should know when you have read the Science Notes for this chapter.

Vocabulary -- know what you are talking about

carrying capacity  food web  k-selected reproduction  ecosystem
primary production  symbiosis  dominance hierarchy  territory
commensalism  limiting factor  r-selected reproduction  trophic level
:parasitism  KiloCalorie  natural selection  energy pyramid

Concepts - understand the big picture

What are the characteristics of r-selected reproduction?
          What are its advantages?
          What are its disadvantages?
What are the characteristics of k-selected reproduction?
          What are its advantages?
          What are its disadvantages?
Is average life span related to reproduction strategy?  In what way?
How does a dominance hierarchy help a group's survival in good times?  In bad times?
How do new species arise from existing ones?

Facts -- get the details right

What is a biome?
What happens if a population exceeds the carrying capacity of its environment?
What is a limiting factor?  Give two examples.
What is the Primary Production of an environment?
What is an ecosystem?  What happens when an ecosystem collapses?

Picture It!
