World Builders  --   Astronomy Study Questions
Unit 1    Your Planetary System

Here are some basic things that you should know when you have read the Science Notes for this chapter.

Vocabulary -- know what you are talking about

orbit  Kepler's Laws  comet Phases of the Moon
the earth's axis  asteroid  planet  light year
mass  density  weight  the Kelvin Scale
The Life Zone  galaxy  radius of a circle  Ort Cloud
Roche's Limit  AU  Main Sequence  The Big Bang

Concepts
- understand the big picture

What are two differences between a planet and a star?
Why does the earth have seasons?
Why do stars shine?
Why are the inner planets rocky and the outer planets gaseous?
How is the size of a star related to its life span?
What is The Main Sequence?
What does the Periodic Table show us?

Facts - get the details right

What are stars made of?
What is an orbit?
How old is the universe?
What is Kepler's first law?
Name four planets in our solar system.
What is the life zone (also called the habitability zone)?
Distances in space are measured in ________________________
Name three elements that have low atomic weights (see the Periodic Table)
Temperatures in space are measured on the __________________ scale.

Picture It!

Draw a diagram of a planetary system with a central star, planets, and moons.
Which planets are rocky? Color them with darker colors.
Which planets are made of gases? Color them blue or pale green.

Now type in the names of the planets, sun, and moons.
