This page is due in class in Week Eleven. In this lesson we put our biomes together. Help the coordinator to put the introductory page together in class in Week Ten or Week Eleven.

Requirements for an A:

All links work. Spelling is correct. Page is legible and attractive.

Draft of assignment is completed on time.

For this assignment you need to describe your land plants and animals and describe how they interact in their environments.

Names: chosen in previous lessons

Basic Facts: Describe conditions in the biome that you are working on. Describe temperature, rainfall, seasonal variations, availability of food and water, and Primary Productivity in Kilocalories per Square Meter.

Describe the Primary Producers: These make food from inorganic materials and energy (plants on earth) Tell the size of the organisms and describe their color and structure.

Describe the Primary Consumers: (herbivores on earth) Describe the plant eaters and tell which plants they eat. Are they warm blooded or cold blooded? How much do they weigh? Do they have any protective mechanisms, such as protective coloration or spines? How do they reproduce?

Describe the Secondary Consumers: (carnivores on earth) These eat the plant eaters. Are they warm blooded or cold blooded? How much do they weigh? Describe them and any special mechanisms that they may have to capture prey.

More Consumers? It is possible that you might have carnivores who prey on smaller carnivores, but this is rare. On earth we see a maximum of 5 layers in ecosystems. If you have additional layers of predators, describe them as you described the secondary consumers.

Illustrations: Should be drawn. Your partners will provide you with some pictures of the life forms. Illustrations may be diagrammatic so long as they get the concepts across. The examples for this page were all done in SuperPaint and did not require extensive graphic knowledge or artistic talent. You will make at least one picture of your biome with all the organisms in it.  Have fun changing sizes, duplicating, distorting, and pasting images into your scene.

What is the Primary Productivity of your biome? Get the number here.

The Food Pyramid or Food Web: This will show who eats and who gets eaten. Every organism will be involved. There are food pyramids in the Biomes section. Use the Primary Productivity number for your biome.

Diagram of the Energy Pyramid: This shows how the energy moves up in the food chain. Give a little explanation about this diagram.

An A assignment will demonstrate that you understand the concepts of a biome, a niche, adaptation, a food web, and an energy pyramid. Adaptations will follow from the parents' characteristics and will be appropriate to the environment.

 B = Good B means good work, work that shows effort, thought, and  some understanding of a biome, a niche, adaptation, a food web, and an energy pyramid.

Assignments that get a B will show that:

All parts of the assignment have been attempted, but the page shows deficiencies such as:

  • spelling errors
  • minimal animal descriptions
  • minimal biome descriptions
  • inappropriate adaptations
  • illustrations that don't make sense
  • poor understanding of evolution and adaptation
  • draft not turned in by deadline
  • minor information errors
 C = Fair means work that shows effort, but is deficient in thought and understanding of a biome, a niche, adaptation, a food web, and an energy pyramid.

Assignments that get a C will show that:

Only parts of the assignment will have been attempted, and/or the page shows deficiencies such as:

  • spelling and grammatical errors
  • poor page layout and organization
  • incomplete or missing animal descriptions
  • incomplete or missing biome descriptions
  • inappropriate adaptations or adaptations without reasons given
  • illustrations that don't make sense or are inappropriate
  • very little understanding of evolution and adaptation
  • draft not turned in by deadline and so late as to cause problems for the group
  • incorrect information
  • indications that student did not do research or read the Science Notes

Assignments with many of the problems listed in C will get grades below C.
